11. Namib Desert - Sossusvlei
The Namib Desert, a seemingly never-ending wave of vibrant red dunes gives the country its name. This coastal desert with a surface area of 55’000 km2 is Africa’s largest nature reserve.
The Sossusvlei dunes were formed by an accumulation of sand transported over tremendous distances by the West wind, sometimes from as far away as the interior of the Kalahari. It is also one of the only deserts to gain ground from the sea and boasts the oldest and highest dunes in the world culminating at over 350m.
