7. Damaraland
The Damara people gave their name to this superb region. It encompasses the Brandberg Massif – called the Fire Mountain because it shimmers and glows at sunset – and boasts Namibia’s highest peak the Königstein at 2’573 m).
Among the unusual features of Damaraland, not far from Twyfelfontein, is a wall of basaltic columns known as “Organ Pipes” and a geological phenomenon, the “Petrified Forest”, composed of fossilized coniferous tree trunks.
